Pediatric Neurologist Fraudulently Diagnosed Hundreds of Kids with Epilepsy

A Dearborn Michigan pediatric neurologist may be the biggest scum bag in the history of pediatric medicine.  His despicable actions give a whole new meaning to medical malpractice.  Yasser Awaad, M.D. is employed by Oakwood Hospital at a base pay of $250,000 per year plus incentives for bringing in business (including ordering tests) to the hospital.  For Dr. Awaad, the financial incentives trumped the oath to first do no harm.  In 2005, he was the top-paid doctor at the hospital, reportedly earning over $600,000.

How did Awaad earn the extra cash?  By falsely diagnosing hundreds of children with epilepsy and then putting them on powerful ant-seizure medications, most of which are narcotics, and ordering four annual and equally unnecessary brain MRIs or CTs at thousands of dollars a pop.  Anti-seizure meds such as phenobarbitol are p0werful narcotics.  These are drugs that should never be ingested by children whose brains are still developing unless the benefits outweigh the serious risks of the drug.   Two parents who came forward said that Dr. A-wod falsely diagnosed their son at age 3 with a seizure disorder, and for the next six years prescribed ant-seizure medications and ordered four brain scans a year.  The powerful narcotics eventually caused the boy to have memory problems, sleepiness, and weakness, so mom and dad took him to another doctor.  The new doctor found that the boy never had epilepsy or any other condition that would justify the prescription medications or other treatment from Dr. A-hole.  In case you wondered if “Dr. Yasser I have no soul” could sink any lower, he told the same boy’s parents that they “shouldn’t have any more kids because our other children would end up with epilepsy,” according to the mother.

Lawsuits are pending in Wayne County Circuit Court, and I wonder if the advocates of tort reform are marching outside the court house chanting that these innocent children should be denied their Seventh Amendment right to trial by jury or that their damages (including brain damage from unnecessary narcotics) are frivolous, or that their recoveries should be capped?  What if Dr. Evil’s unnecessary treatment caused one of the hundreds of kids to suffer permanent, severe brain damage?  Would any tort reformer honestly think that child’s damages should be capped at some artificial number?
